100 Amp to 200 Amp Panel Upgrade Cost in Calgary (2026)
Most Calgary homes pay $2,500 to $6,000 to go from 100 amps to 200 amps. The number that moves the price most is not the panel. It is whether your service comes in overhead or underground, and whether the cable already in the ground can carry 200 amps.

What drives the price of a panel upgrade?
Four things decide where your job lands. The service type matters most: an overhead mast is quick to replace, while an underground service may need a new conductor run from the meter to the property line. The rest is the meter base, the condition of the existing circuits, and whether a sub-panel is added for a garage, suite or addition.
Overhead vs underground service, and whether the existing underground cable is rated for 200A.
Meter base and service entrance: replaced only if they are undersized or damaged.
Existing wiring: old circuits that fail inspection or need arc-fault protection add labour.
Sub-panels for a detached garage, basement suite or addition (other contractors list $800–$2,500+).
Utility work: any work on the utility side of the meter is quoted by ENMAX (Calgary) or FortisAlberta (much of the surrounding area), not by the electrician.
Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Calgary?
Yes, always. A service upgrade cannot be done on a homeowner permit: the City of Calgary does not let homeowners alter the main service, main panel, main breaker or meter base. A contractor pulls the permit, and a Safety Codes Officer inspects the work.
Before ENMAX re-energizes a home after a residential service change, the meter base needs a City “green sticker”, which shows an inspector found it safe to energize. Voltra files the permit and books the inspection as part of every upgrade.
How does the ENMAX service upgrade process work?
In Calgary the wire owner is ENMAX Power. Service upgrades from 60, 100 or 200 amps go through ENMAX’s Get Connected process, which asks for the site details, the new panel size in amps and volts, and a site plan. ENMAX tells homeowners to talk to their electrician first, and in practice the electrician coordinates the disconnect and reconnect.
In Airdrie, Cochrane and much of the region outside Calgary the wire owner is FortisAlberta, which quotes the utility side after reviewing the connected load.
Do I actually need 200 amps?
Not always. The answer comes from a load calculation under the Canadian Electrical Code (Rule 8-200 for single dwellings; Alberta adopted the 2024 edition on April 1, 2025), not from the panel size on its own. The City of Calgary requires a qualified electrician to do that calculation, even on homeowner permits.
The usual triggers are an EV charger, hot tub, heat pump or air conditioner, a basement suite, or a fuse panel. If the only new load is an EV charger, an EV energy management system can sometimes avoid the upgrade. Voltra runs the calculation first and only quotes an upgrade when the numbers call for one.
How long does a 200A upgrade take?
Most upgrades are done in one day on site, with the power off for roughly 3 to 8 hours. Underground jobs that need new cable take longer and depend on the utility’s schedule. Allow time before the work day for the permit and the utility booking.
FAQ
200 Amp Panel Upgrade Cost: common questions
Most Calgary homes pay $2,500–$6,000, including panel, breakers, permit and inspection. Voltra’s quotes for this job usually fall between $2,500 and $5,000. Underground services that need a new 200A cable can cost $7,000–$10,000 or more.
No. The City of Calgary does not allow homeowner permits for work on the main service, main panel, main breaker or meter base. A contractor must pull the permit, and the meter base needs a green sticker before ENMAX re-energizes the home.
It depends on the job. Some Calgary contractors report no ENMAX fee for a straightforward upgrade, while work on the utility side, such as a new underground service, is quoted by ENMAX under its tariff. Your electrician should tell you up front whether utility work is likely.
Not necessarily. A load calculation decides it. Many 100A homes can add a Level 2 charger with an EV energy management system that limits charging when the house is busy. Homes adding several large loads usually need 200A.
Usually one day on site, with power off for about 3–8 hours. Permits and utility booking add lead time before the work day.
